Rustoleum Rust Reformer
Rustoleum Rust Reformer
I have some light surface rust on the inside of the cab of my '55 truck I am restoring in some areas that is poking through the paint. On other areas where the rust is more substantial I use POR15. However that product is not great over other painted surfaces with light rust coming through. It works great on heavier rust and properly prepped bare metal but not this application.
How is people's experience with Rust reformer? Reviews are positive but I trust everyone's experience here much more than random online reviews. It seems ideal to be able to scuff up the area and paint over the light rust while it will also adhere to the surrounding paint if scuffed up properly. Or is that the wrong use for it. It also says it needs no further top coat which is convenient as I am going to put sound deadening mat over all the areas. The floor and back wall of the cab I wire wheeled all the rust away and put down 2k primer but that is not practical for the inner roof and the other heavily curved and recessed areas.. I don't want the rust to continue to develop under the mat so I figured rust reformer and then maybe 2k primer if it was necessary.
All thoughts welcome!

Are you talking about Rust-Oleum Rust reformer in a rattle can? I have used it in a lot of areas with satisfaction but not in the underside of the cab
roof.
Sometimes I top coat with paint sometimes not. For your situation I don't think you have to paint over it if it will be behind the headliner.

Thirty years ago when I was restoring my F-2 there weren't a lot of places to find body parts specific to the larger pickups so I had to work with what I had. My back fenders were in really bad shape. I replace about 3" along the inside edge and on the bottoms, pretty much replaced about 30% of the metal. These were areas that I could use flat pieces of sheet metal but on the curved areas there wasn't going to any easy patching. In the curved area I had some pretty bad rust pits and I knew if I would blast them I'd end up with screen door material. I ground off the surface rust I could and applied Extend rust converter all over the metal especially in the deep rust pits. Extend is now owned by Rustoleum. After applying it and letting it dry I did my body work and primered and painted the fenders. It's been over 30 years and the fender look like they did when I painted them. My truck isn't a trailer queen but I do occasionally drive it during in the winter if the road are clear, I've even driven it a few times in the snow. I would give it a thumbs up.
