The tip for vacuum line is broken on this thing which is located under the battery on driver side next to vacuum canister. I tried to glue it, but it didn't hold up and broke again. What is this thing and how does it work?
I have low brake efficiency on the second pedal push. Meaning brakes are great on the first push, but if I release the pedal and immediately step on brakes again I'm seeing like a half of braking efficiency. Pedal doesn't feel soft and not sinking, just no braking power. Obviously I am losing some vacuum there.
I'll try it on Monday.
Both my '92 F-350 ZF5 and '93 F-250 E4OD have this thing mounted on the inner fender underneath the driver side battery holder with vacuum line connected on one side and electrical connector on the other. Maybe somebody else will chime in.
I'll have to check my Bullnose truck. I think I have one of those behind the passenger's side battery, near the glow plug relay. Mine currently leaks vacuum just like a vacuum reservoir mounted nearby. I thought it was some sort of cruise control (vehicle speed) switch...
Cruise Control unit
or
Low Vacuum Sensor
Connects to vacuum line from vacuum pump via "T" up near wipers.
Turns on warning light if Vacuum Pump, Booster Diaphram, related vacuum lines, cruise control (if installed) fails.
That will definitely leak enough vacuum to kill Power Brake Booster efficiency.
this triggers the red BRAKE light on your cluster when vacuum pressure falls below a certain value (maybe 10 psi)
Yes, the light sez BRAKE in red. And book sez 3 things will make that light illuminate -- pk brake not fully released - master cylinder fluid low - vacuum psi low diesel engine
I've looked all over -- except in junkyard -- it's unobtanium. E3TA-12A182-AA is the part number. A lot of guys install a separate vacuum gauge to monitor psi -- several ports available on the vacuum manifold under the brake master cylinder.
If very carefull you maybe able to drill out what is left of the nipple and use a nipple connector for a replacement. Mearsure the new nipple for the correct size drill bit. I have been successful more than once in repairing this sort of thing.

Ah uh! So this explains my random brake light in my F250 over the years. It's probably been this thing. I'll unhook both the vac and the electric line to it. About once every couple months or so the brake light will randomly come on (only stays on for like 5 mins or so, sometimes longer), while I know there's not a dang thing wrong with the system.
1 out of 10 of those random times, pulling up the e-brake handle will turn it off so I always try, but most of the time it's always been a phantom light! Thanks man! I don't recall ever seeing this, but I must have at some time. I'm hydroboost converted anyway, so I'm not concerned about that.
Thanks guys. I broke it while replacing the fenders. Pulled vacuum line off and that plastic thing broke right off. The possibility is that it was already cracked and was waiting for me to finish the job. Glued with super glue and installed the whole thing back, then after a while got that braking issue, but don't recall BRAKE light coming on, so maybe it's not working as it should. Since I know now what it is and what it supposed to do, I'll test it and see if it's worth being repaired. If not, will go with vacuum gauge.
Tom, I think you know that It's next to impossible in our area. I've been recently to 3 yards around here looking for something I might want and all I have seen were 2 Broncos and like 5 OBS pickup trucks, all gassers already stripped to bear bones. However, I was lucky enough to find a tail lights wire harness with good connector and nice clean trim for windshield and that was it. There is a yard in Philly which I was told has some good stuff once in a while, but I would need to have a really good reason to go there. I've been looking for a good bed for my project F-250, but all I can find is close to 2 Grand and few hundred miles away either in New England or in Maryland.
