The TruTrac is going to arrive naked. It will need bearings. It will also need the ring gear and tone ring swapped over. Most install instructions want new ring gear bolts...I bought those as well.
Assuming the differential is in good shape, other than you wanting the TruTrac....measure and record the backlash before you pry the diff out. When you install the bearings on the TruTruc, (I was surprised at the amount of pressfit), think about heating them up. I used a toaster oven/air fryer set to 300 degrees, for about 15 minutes. They won't drop right on, but you get a good start before you drive them on the rest of the way. Gearlube for these units is subject to the will of the people, but Eaton recommends a non-limited slip non-synthetic lube. I decided on Redline 75w-140 with no LS additive....at $25/qt. 3qt will do the job.
Hopefully you have access to a decent dial indicator with a mag base. Measure the BL of the unit you're removing. Measure and record the shim thickness on each side. I subtracted .006 from each as my starting point. Install the shims and carrier. Measure the BL. Somebody posted a chart for the 10.5 in which you look at the BL and the desired BL and it tells you what thickness to add. Do that, measure the BL, and if it's nearly the same as what you measured from the old...add .006 per side and drive them in. Torque the caps up, measure to verify...should be done. Get yourself the +08 up OEM aluminum covers...add the gear lube, call it a wrap.

It's a bad job, just a bit tedious.
This is very helpful, thanks for the write up. I just came across the thread you started about heating up the differential.
I've been using a clamp dial indicator, so this is a good excuse to pick up a magnet base one.
I hadn't thought about a new cover, but definitely makes sense. Especially if it has a drain plug...
Did you reuse bearings or replace all with new? As far as I can tell bearings are doing fine, though the truck is coming up on 200k so am leaning towards replacing everything while it's apart.
Thanks again for the write up.
Edit: I think I figured out that I can leave the pinion bearing alone and just replace the differential carrier bearings mentioned above.
Well, right here is my app on my phone and I don’t see sigs!
You must not have it enabled in the settings. Hit the gear up in the top right corner next to your name. Then in the left margin under the header Settings and Options hit edit options. Now scroll down to the 4th subsection "Thread Display Options" and the first box you can click is for show signatures. After any changes made in that page you have to go to the very bottom of the page and click save changes.
looking at Google Play Store, both on my android phone, and on this laptop, ford truck enthusiasts
does not bring up an app for this forum
it would really help to provide us a link, to what ever app you are using
I would if I could find it, but it's like it doesn't exist. It doesn't even show up in my apps list in the app manager, but when I long press the icon it pops up settings and info tab. I clicked the info and it claims I downloaded it from Google Play Store. I vaguely remember downloading it after being prompted several times a week or 2 ago.

Actually, we don't need the App.
I have Firefox installed on my Android phone, and this is how it looks to me, almost Identical to how it looks on my laptop, just a narrower width.
BUT, the signatures still don't show up.
I don't use the cellphone very much for forums, the screen display is too restrictive, and typing is a PITA, when my fingers on a kybd can run 100 wpm
