I can't see it being feasible on a 4wd truck, least not mine. Youd need to fabricate a crossmember or mount for the rack, then make custom tie rods, and custom hoses of course. Not sure how you'd route the steering column linkage tho.
Has anyone tried or completed a conversion from a box to a steering rack and pinion without doing a crown vic swap out?
No. Can't do it. I've looked into it and thought about it at length.
Why not? In overly simple terms, consider bumpsteer, and recall that the "flex point" (my term for the up/down point) of the suspension has to be the same as the flex point of the steering linkage, so unless you want to change-out the suspension at the same time.....
When I had my ball joints replaced, there was a noticeable increase in steering response. I use to be able to rotate my hand out of the way and read the speedometer, without the truck steering... to being able to do the same, but the truck does slightly change direction.
