Ok my truck is a 1995 F150 4X4 4.9L 5speed and when
I basically floor it the truck misses bad the truck won't
go above 55MPH and my moms van is dead so help.
Start with the simple stuff.
Pull the codes - if nothing shows up.
Give it a tuneup. After that could be anything from fuel supply to plugged exhaust. Need more information.
yoda, sounds like your cat is stopped up. I had a jimmy that did the same thing, but it wouldnt go over 20. Just my .02 cents though, cause im not a mechanic at all, lol. That is something i would check first though. The more experienced in here will have alot better answer for ya probably.
cataletic (i didnt spell that right) convertor, its on your exhaust system. Looks like a tiny muffler, if it gets clogged up then it will cause your engine to 'sufficate' or not breath very well. When that happens then your engine wont run right at all, and possibly wont run at all until the convertor is replaced.
pulling codes.... im gonna leave that to the others, cause i have no clue. I do know u hook into your computer and it gives you codes. There is something u can buy at the local parts store (40-50 bucks) that does this, but like i said i dunno about that one.
I use an analog voltmeter to pull the codes. The first time you do it it takes a half hour or so -- learning curve and rechecking to make sure you read the "swings" accurately.
Search code reader on this forum and you'll find a few links to the exact process. A haynes or chiltons manual will tell you as well.
How many miles on the truck? A clogged catalytic converter is a possibility - but I'd check the codes before doing any work.
Relive fuel system pressure by prying up on the inertia fuel system shutoff switch ( located on the right side cowl panel just forward of the door). then start the engine and let it run until it stalls, crank the engine for a few more seconds to make sure all the fuel is out of the line.
