Hey all so after Making up mind to keep the 300 in my 84 short box I contacted Jeff and he's sent out one of his intakes for me along with a set of his washers and I'm going to run a new set of EFI exhaust with it and will be ordering valve&pushrod covers from Jeff also next month. 1st question will the head of an efi engine gain me any advantages from the 84 carbed head i.e better parts? bigger better valves/rockers? Can you even do that. #2 I'd like to freshen up engine, gaskets, freeze plugs, cam and have head rebuilt so what did you guys use parts wise for valvetrain/cam what should I have done to head other than guides/seals when having rebuilt, is there a kit that has decent parts for this through anyone that has. Should I just pull engine and take to a builder and say call me when it's done? I'm not afraid of doing the work never done much deep engine stuff so I'm not sure how to go about this. Get a new long block? Just wanna liven it up and have good strong reliable engine without wasting money. 3rd Jeff has given me some info carb wise I'm thinking a small 4 brl what are you guys running/suggest and with the efi exhaust manifolds is there a difference between van abd truck and any brand i should stay away from. Thanks again for your help and advice and also big thanks to Mr Pierce for the parts he's building. I'm in Spokane WA if there's anyone else local that would could help me out with shops for having machining done all the guys I use to use have retired or passed away. Have a great day and thanks again, Steve
Just remember you are going down a road not well traveled. The masses hop up the v8 engines, and there are a lot of hop up parts available at a reasonable price. You will find the 300 six is not a common engine to modify. It is done, but it's not a slam dunk like the v8"s. And it's more expensive also.
First you may want to ask this question down in the 240 / 300 six motor area as there are a few who have done what you want and one guy that races a 300 six.
Me a lot depends on what I will be using the truck for, what power I think I can get and still keep it for what I want to use the truck for and what MPG will it get.
What every you do will not out run a v8, the 300 is a work horse motor, 302 is a race motor in my book.
Me I was looking to use and drive my truck as much as I could be a back up to pull my 20 ft open deck car trailer and have pretty good MPG.
All of this on the cheap and no rebuild as the motor / head did not need it. Gaskets did leak and I found the exh manifold was not for a pickup, think van?
I was able to swap parts and got the EFI manifolds and because I wanted MPG stayed with the factory log intake & carb.
I also went with 94 F150 exh pipes all the way to tail pipe as they were bigger than my 81 pipes.
For me the 300 matched to my NP435 granny 4sp is just what I want for what I use the truck for.
Not fast but gets the job done, pulls 15 MPG avg. empty and able to tow a 20 ft enclosed trailer for the car club.
Nothing like a classic truck pulling a car club trailer to shows
