Fuel dilution? If it is perceived or otherwise validated.

Possibly, however if you are experiencing enough fuel dilution that you are reducing the viscosity of a Xw-40 oil to the point were you have accelerated wear rates you are either running the oil far too long or you have a mechanical issue that the 50 top weight can help band aid but not address, IMHO of course. These things can run just fine on 30 top weight oil so a 5w40 shearing down to 12.4cSt isn't going to cause an issue in pretty much all cases, it needs to get pretty thin before wear rates really start to jack up.

Here is something to consider with temps and weights. The trucks have temp probes that tell you the engine oil temps. Use that to go on, not your ambient temps. With the massive cooling systems the trucks use, engine oil temps can remain pretty consistent and remain in the temp range for 40 weight, even in triple digit temps.

Rule of thumb for 50 weight oil is if oil temps are a sustained 275* or higher. 40W is good up to 275, with average temps hovering the 260* mark.

50W is great for the older lower tolerance engines, but todays engines are better off with 40W.

No issue with wear rates here in Texas with either 10W30, 5W40 and 15W40 oils. As a matter of fact, I hear more 6.7PSD with spun bearing occur more in the colder climate areas and looking at the big picture, is probably been a bigger problem.

With the nearly 300k miles and 12 years on my truck, I just hook up and go and don't pay attention to oil temps anymore.
