Can anyone explain to me what this term means, i have a 1993 Superduty 7.3. 5 speed.I had a new clutch, dual mass flywheel ,throw out bearing, main front bearing replaced in tranny, I still have clattering noise in nuetral. I have no clattering upon excelleration.Im not sure what term gear rollover means, and is this common in this tranny. I also herd its called gear play? Please clear this up, im confused.
sounds like a throw out bearing to me. wouldnt be the first time ive heard of a new throw out bearing bein bad from the start. by the way, are you sure yer truck is a super duty? im pretty sure that they started the production of them in 99'.
Gear rollover is a noise that only happens in neutral with the clutch engaged. It is not related to the throw out bearing.
What happens is the engine does not really run at a steady RPM. Especially at idle it is speeding up a small amount as each cylinder fires. It slows a small amount between cylinders firing. This change in RPM makes the teeth on the gears in the transmission bang into each other. It's harmless, but noisy.
All above is correct ,but let me add the following
If you had a front main bearing replaced (input shaft bearing)
because it was bad or sloppy out of spec for what ever reason.
That input shaft and the gear attached to it was worn also, should have been replaced. The matching gears get a wear set pattern to them ,now it's changed because of the new bearing.this can cause more noise
When rebuilding trannys you do a complete job,or somewhere down the road it will let you down.
If you got noticeable gearwhine? or bearing howl in this tranny after they put the parts in ,you still have a problem in it.
Granted this truck is a 93 and I don't know how much money you wish to spend on it.
But my point is when a repair is done and the tranny is out, why not rebuild it the best you can.
The gear rollover on an older tranny using 80w/90w oil
should not be anywhere as loud or noticable as these newer trannys with
ATF in them
