I got the locking/dragging front caliper issue solved. It was the aftermarket booster. It still has a severe pull to the right going down the road. I didn’t see anything loose, bearings have no play, tires are practically new. I had alignment done yesterday to try and solve it. Toe was out some on that side, which was adjusted but it’s still pulling. I have had the alignment checked several times and it’s always the toe that comes out. Rack and tie rods aren’t that old, I didn’t feel any play in them. What else could I check for?
Q: Are you saying you have gotten multiple alignment checks/adjustments & the Toe is off each time?
Q: When you replaced the booster that was malfunctioning, did you replace anything on passenger's side where it was dragging?
Q: Have you checked air pressure & tread profile in all 4 tires?
Q: Just for giggles, have you taken your tires & swapped sides with them? (IE - put the rights on the left & lefts on the right)
You mentioned the rack & tie rods "aren’t that old", but you have already been let down by an "aftermarket booster". Why assume they are good?
Alignments are not supposed to change drastically without some kind of intervention. Bad part, hit something, human error, etc...
When your booster was dragging on the right, how long was that?
Pads & rotors that were dragged for prolonged amount of time may be "grabby'er" than the side that didn't.
The air pressure is often overlooked & will cause a pull. (alignment tech "should" have checked this each time)
Swapping the sides with the tires may reveal an issue you didn't see on the tires.
If the "problem" changes by swapping sides then you have an issue with a tire.
When the brakes were dragging I didn’t really drive it. Just to test drive it after replacing the calipers, hoses, pads. When it was still dragging I did drive it to have a master cylinder put on. Then when I got it back it was still doing it so I changed out the booster. They definitely don’t drag now. You can even feel the difference taking off. The new pads probably have 12 miles on them. The steering pull happened after I got the new tires and Mavis told me to put a camber kit on before they could align it. Never had that problem before. Since then toe has come out 3 times. So I went to another Mavis, Discount tire, and Firestone. I posted the after alignment specs on the Ranger group and there was a reply that my caster/camber is off too much between sides. Even though it was in the green they said it would definitely cause a pull. A tire was suspected too but I had them checked, rotated, and balanced yesterday. The rack is a maybe a year old. It’s a reman Ford unit not the cheap new ones from China.
Roads are typically cambered to the right in the right lane for drainage, and that will cause the car to pull to the right. To see if that is what you are feeling, find a divided highway. They usually have the fast lane cambered toward the median, and the slow lane cambered to the right. If you still have it pull to the right when you are in the fast lane, you do have a problem.
