Wanted to update on an old thread @RacinJasonWV made but cannot find it. So here's a new one.
I finally had reason to pull my AIS. Not a good reason; CA smog finally noticed my Mishimoto IC. Passed smog inspection 6 times, but not 7. So I had to install an OEM IC. Sourced from one of the many Rancho Cordova yards $125.
The job was way easier 13 years ago.
So I had the usual 3" hole in the side of my AIS. Decided to cut the opening lower to allow flow more directly under the filter and not only to the side. I think the pics are self explanatory. The original hole plus the recent cut out.
I think they noticed the aftermarket intercooler. But again, why in the world would that matter. After you pass inspection, I would swap it back in and see if it takes another 7 years or them to notice it. Probably not worth the effort but that is such an ignorant thing to ding you about.
Smog checks/inspections are about revenue, not common sense or actual concern for any aspect of environmental protection (as the meaning of "EPA" would lead one to believe).
It's unfortunate that people are subjected to this tyranny, but swapping out the CAC on a 99-07 7.3L/6.0L isn't more than an hours' worth of work and if it's something the owner deems necessary to have, then just swap it out whenever it fails.
Sorry about your inspection woes. That’s ridiculous considering the Mishimoto is more efficient and would improve air quality. The rules are so messed up.
