Light Controls Missing ****

1979 F150 Ranger/Lariat

Good morning!

Random question for yall, so my instrument panel lights are not on but I can dim the gear selector and radio/HVAC control lights. I’m just wondering if I just need to keep turning the light controls ****. The problem is mine is missing the **** so I’m just stuck with the metal rod. Do I turn it until it clicks like with the wiper washer? I can’t turn it by hand so I’m about ready to use some pliers but I’m afraid of breaking it.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

Turn it counter clockwise until it clicks to turn on the dome light inside. The rotation left or right will also dim or brighten your dash lights. If all are not lighting, you likely need bulbs in the dash cluster. Keep in mind that the "click" will leave your dome light on so you will need to turn it out of that position to keep it from leaving the light on.

Instrument lights dim / brighten when the gear range and radio illumination lights dim / brighten. Only click felt is felt when turning it to the left (counter clock wise) to turn on the dome light.

Could be you have a connection or printed circuit sheet on back of instrument cluster, or burnt out bulbs. As I recall, thinking only a couple bulbs light the whole instrument cluster up, and they can be dim by dirt, age. Other bulbs like turn signal indicator, brake light, etc.

I cleaned my head light switch contact ring after removing the switch into my basement shop, it helped. I used some contact cleaner and a swab, it's mounted on the front of the headlight switch and it can get dirty in 40+ years. You can replace that three sided rod with a new one, or even used one that still has a **** on it. There is a button to push on top of the headlight switch to release it, but disconnect the battery first or your headlights will be on.

Once you have the **** you will be able to turn the shaft easily and turn the dash lights up to full bright and or also turn on your dome light on when the doors closed. That is what the click past the little stop feeling it when the dash lights are on full bright. Dome light on.

PM me your address and I will send you one. Normally the **** stays with the headlight switch shaft. They go in and come out that way. But most people just yank on the **** until they come off and then have to JB weld them back on.

The little button on top (or bottom depends on how the switch was installed) of the headlight switch is the push in, and hold in to get the shaft to come out. Might have to push in out a few times on the shaft, AND the button to get it to go do down and be held down.
