Ignition control module & coil

Hi all, again.

The family I bought my 74 F100 from had a much more recent 240 put in it. With that, I've had to buy different distributor caps and things along the way. I had to get a wide, short one for a different year, as opposed to the tall, thin one that I thought I'd need (based on it being a 74).

First, I could use some help finding the proper ignition control module. I bought one based on it being a 74 and the wire colors were out of order and the truck just got stuck rev'ing (I assume powering the starter constantly?), so I put the old one back on and it works fine. It's melting (as you can see in one of the pics) and I figured it best to replace it.

Here are a couple of pics of the wire order if someone could be so kind as to help me figure out what year I'd need, I'd appreciate it! I've done some looking myself but still haven't found the properly ordered wires to match. I've tried to narrow it by the blue plug but still finding white and red flipped around as well as random others out of order. And, at times, the plug teeth were different where one was horizontal and another vertical.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The other thing is, I am going to replace the ignition coil with something like a blue streak and was wondering, based on having to get a distributor cap from an 80's model (I believe it was an 80, via O'Reilly's), does that mean I'd also need to get the ignition coil from that as well or is it best to just take mine to get the parts store to match it up for me?

I'm learning lots from the process but it being mixed around with the replaced motor (which I'm grateful they had done with less than 10k on it), I don't want to mix and match things that aren't safe/won't work. So thanks again, I appreciate all the help I've gotten here.

DuraSpark ignition modules identified by a colored plastic insert located above where the wires feed out.

1974 ignition module edge tab color should be black. And I believe they are not interchangeable. So to get the blue module you have to work the PO might of changed some wiring around. Ignition modules, 74 (black grommet) and 75 (green grommet) are year specific and will not interchange.76 to 79 (blue grommet) are interchangeable. Ignition modules: 1974 is 1974 ONLY / D4AZ-12A199-C 1974 only and 1975 is 1975 ONLY.
Blue module introduced in 1976 was used well into the 1990's.
2 others: One has a redplastic insert, the other has a yellowor brownplastic insert.
Redmodule is D7AZ-12A199-Aused in some CA vehicles ONLY.
D9AZ-12A199-C(replaced D8AZ-12A199-A). One of these modules isyellow, one is brown.
Since the part number was replaced, I cannot recall which module was which color.
These modules were used in 1978/79 302 & 351M/W vehicles sold in high altitudes only. 351W: Passenger Cars & Econolines only.
1U2Z-12A199-AA(replaced D6AZ-12A199-B - D7AZ-12A199-B - D8VZ-12A199-A - D9VZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module -blueinsert (Motorcraft DY-893) / Available from Ford.

Thank you! Great info!

So, I'll likely have to dig through the 76-90's potentially to find the proper wiring order? Is that the easiest/smartest course to take? I have looked and looked and can't find the proper wiring order for my particular ICM, which appears to be red, white, green-black, green, purple, orange.

As for the ignition coil, will that also mean it is different from the 74 as well? Not related?

73-79 coil and c clip staid the same, but the 73-76 early 77 wiring might if been s little different.

I feel like mine must be some crazy off the wall ICM, I literally can't find it anywhere. I've searched up and down. I just looked at it again and cleaned the wires up a little. 12A199 is a super common part number for Motorcraft so doesn't help either.

Red, white, black-green striped, neon green, purple, orange seems to be from another planet. I'm assuming, and maybe I shouldn't be, but, that the wires do need to be matching? Or is blue grommet all that matters? If that's the case, I've severely over-thought the whole thing. Haha. I just want to make sure I'm not going to cause any damage/issues by using one with the wires in a different order. Otherwise, any help finding the matching one to mine would be incredibly appreciated.

Does this help?

If it runs with the current module, keep it. Same with the coil. Maybe just shop for a spare to keep on hand. I'd trust a vintage part more than a new communist chinese electrical part.

Here's how to test your current coil & the specs for the 1974 "Solid State" system.

I dont think I can check my 81 F100 wire colors on my blue wire pull.
I also had to change mine out because the potting was leaking out also.
I went with a NAPA top of the line ICM for a 81 F100 with a 300 six and in my case worked just fine.

Follow up with picture from my 81 F100 with a 300 six.

L to R wire colors
Orange - Purple - Black - Green White - Red
Sorry I did not think of getting the wire colors at the plugs to see if they change there or not?
I have seen it posted some colors out of the box do not match the old but have not heard of run issues?

I am looking for a spare mostly now, I decided that I'm just happy they're working, just nervous that I won't be able to find what I need when they eventually don't anymore.

I'm hoping that might be the case, as the color order of mine seems to not exist (outside of mine), which makes me wonder how important that is? Yours is close to mine color-wise. Thank you for the help!
