Look at the battery and see where the positive lead goes. If it goes to the frame, its a ground if it goes to the starter relay (solenoid as most people call it) it is hot.

I think the regulator is on the passenger side inner fender near the battery. Should look like a metal box with a plug with lots of wires on it.

Unless your alt has a special plug in adaptor, it should have 3 posts to where certain wires attach. You should have 1 black marked post, 1 red marked post, and one post with no markings on it. The red one has a wire that goes to the battery to charge it. The black one goes to ground. The unmarked one goes to eyour voltage regulator and/or voltage guage. Unless it has a plug-in adaptor, the voltage regulator is mounted on the pass. side fenderwell near the battery and under the starter relay.

The ground cable from the battery should go to a stud on the side of the engine block near the front. Make sure you clean the connector and the place on the block where it bolts on. No oil, grease, corrosion, etc.... You want good clean bare metal and a good tight connection.

uhh in 85 ford offered both the internal and external regulated alternator. so the regulator possibly maybe installed in the alt, and not on the fender... Kurt
