Thats why I am trying to hang onto my old 7.3, it is still "complex" compared to the old Mercedes diesel I one had (which was totally mechanical) but overall the older F sds were quite simple. In terms of fighting rust, ine guy in VA I know who plows put his truck on a lift and used rust converter, primer then painted the entire underbody, rails and lines with rustolieum black. Says it made a huge difference. I had to replace several brake lines on the old F150 farm truck that had been literally rusted through. What a mess. I do not enjoy crawling around under dirty rusty trucks.
Rebuilding older trucks is something ive been looking into more and more. Right now ive got 13 active trucks and I wont even mention how much my three newest 2024 bottom of the barrel work trucks ran me. Not only are they expensive but they also have so much electrical mumbo jumbo thats way too complicated and a nightmare to isolate and troubleshoot when the guaranteed to have issues rear up.
Been looking at southern 2013-2016 model F250s through F550s to purchase and rebuild as needed instead of buying new. I get about 12-15 years out of a body here in CT. Gave up plowing and lay off the crew for January and February now so the trucks hardly see any road salt, sand, stones, and water. Winter keeps getting shorter here so thats a plus for rotting trucks.
I’ve seen that quite often. Lots of construction, contractors, landscaping, guys think it’s worth putting plows on their trucks and keep their guys busy year round. Usually lasts a few yrs or so until they realize how hard that is on their fleet, and say the heck with it. Not too mention, the guys realize getting up a ’o-dark-thirty to plow, with no schedule, isn’t as fun as is sounds.

If someone came out with something for $10-15k new, I’d probably buy one.
I priced out a new 250 last Feb. Same spec as my ‘06. Lariat, diesel, 4x4, matching cap, etc. 5 yr payment plan. All said and done, paid for, parked in my driveway = $140k Cdn.
They’ve lost touch with reality. Count me out. I’ll keep rebuilding my current trucks, and go south a drag home 20+ yr old trucks.
Yrs ago when I bought my 02 F350 4x/CC/7.3/DRW, and my 01 4x/CC/7.3/DRW I had priced a new F350, same/same, 85k, instead I bought both of them, and was in for 44k for TWO trucks, and I also have a handful of older trucks, and I keep buying other old chunks of iron, over 80k for a new truck, NOPE, Ford and the others can GFY! I'll pay 2-3k for an old pile and throw 2500 at it and enjoy it, no bells n whistles and IDGAF, missed a super clean 147k mile F350/4x/7.3/ZF5 a few weeks ago for 10k 🤦♂️ still kicking myself for not jumping on it the first day. Reg. cab, needed some TLC, but dang the bones were good!
Hopefully since Wed. morning things might come back to reality, but I'm not holdin my breath...
Nice truck @Pickupmanx2 . I would still love to have a 70's crew cab. And a bullnose, and a 55 and 3rd gen.
Last time I was out west, I was going to pick up a bullnose 6.9 4 spd 4x4 crew dually in the desert....got all the way to his house before he decided not to sell it. Bullnose is definitely on my list, but as an east coaster, I'm more than likely gonna have to pick it up in my travels or make picking up a truck THE travel.
I would love a new truck but no way am I paying $80 Grand. The 2005 Excursion is my baby, after 15 years she has never truly let me down, has she had issues, sure, but never has let me sit on the side of the road. She is used for towing and long trips, this year she has been coast to coast with the camper. The 6.0L is a great machine but it likes to be maintained. I bought her for $22K in 2010 with 74,000 on the clock.
I have a backup for her now, a 2000 Ex V-10 that I am cleaning up and fixing issues.
Along with the 2 Excursions I also have 2- 72 Chevelles, 2- 2018 Fusions, 2000 Durango, 2003 Mercedes E320 and a 2005 Pontiac Vibe. No need for a new car payment
