Original Shock Absorbers?

D2TF-18080-EA

When’s the last time you saw this part number?

Replaced the rear shocks (should have done it 10 years ago when I got the truck…whoops) on my 72 F250 Camper Special last week. Just slipped my mind the last 10 years I guess, don’t ask me how lol. Done a once-or-twice-over on dang near everything on this truck, except the rear shocks somehow.

Anyways, the old ones I took out are original Motorcraft parts with that ford part number on them. Are those original Ford parts? From back before Ford had to give up Motorcraft? I see the D2 and think 1972…these aren’t the original shocks from the assembly line are they? There’s no way…probably just dealership service replacements from maybe the 80s? Either way, I’m a crazy person and I kept them. I’m weird about the parts I take off this truck, I like to keep the memories of working on it.

I went with Monroe 34911 for replacements. As for your truck, I don’t know unfortunately. There seem to be two options, with & without crewcab. I don’t trust their part descriptions much though as the 34911’s state “without camper package,” yet mine is a Camper Special & these are the only shocks that fit for me. Best bet is to get a visual look at what you have and find some that look the same.

I would say it is a Dealership replacement. In 1973 Ford sold the Autolite brand to Bendix. Then started the Motorcraft name. Your shock says Motorcraft not Autolite.

Never, because it's not a part number, it's the ID engineering number marked on the part. D2TF-18080-EA crosses over to Ford part number: D1TZ-18125-A

In 1971, Ford was forced to sell Auto-Lite, as the US Government claimed that Ford had a monopoly on auto parts.

Ford then started in-house brand Motorcraft, all the former Auto-Lite part numbers became Motorcraft part numbers.

D1TZ-18125-A .. Rear Heavy Duty Shock Absorber = 1970/72 F100/250 2WD

At some point, this Ford part number was replaced by a Motorcraft part number, but I don't have the info, because my OSI* catalog is on microfiche and my microfiche viewer bulb burned out.

Ah, I got the Autolite & Motorcraft history backwards in my head. Shame shame

As always, thank you NumberDummy, your responses are always valuable learning experiences to me. I had no idea about the ID numbers. Glad to have the actual part number now! Though I’m sad to hear about the bulb, are replacements available? I don’t know if microfiche viewers take specific bulbs or not. I haven’t had the pleasure of using one of those yet.
