460 air filter options

I know there are all kinds of practical reasons not to do it, but I thought it would be cool to delete the two tubes and everything going over to the air filter and just put some cone filters, like from K&N, right onto the throttle body. Anyone ever heard of such a thing? I did something similar on my old Jeep TJ purely for the fun of simplifying the engine bay. In this case there is that extra tube from under the throttle body too that would have to be managed. What is that for BTW?

I assume you're talking about something kinda like this, just stuffed directly on the TB. There's not really anything wrong with the OE intake, but its your call.

You mean like this?

The problem with that is that your engine is pulling hot air from right behind the radiator! That, and you'll need some way to filter air to the driver's side valve cover where the air-in for the PCV system. The stock air induction/filter system has a duct that pulls cold air from in front of the radiator support.

Yeah. In my head it was tighter to the throttle body, but then my Jeep inline six I did it to didn't suck as much air as a 460. PCV breather should be no big deal, but there is the IAC that needs to be dealt with as well. I guess I'll stick with stock. Thanks for the pic.

How much air isn’t relevant. The problem is…

Older engines and hot rods routinely have open air cleaners and a separate filter on the valve cover for PCV. Plumbing everything over to the fender is a more modern invention. I understand why it's done, but sometimes I find it fun to simplify, that's all.

Not because the open air filter is better. The engine would rather have colder air from outside the engine bay.

4 wheeler magazine tested a "Cold Air Intake" on a 460 and it made worse power and got worse fuel economy than the stock setup. They wrapped the stock setup in foil duct tape and reduced underhood temps, made more power and got better fuel economy with a K&N filter with the oil treatment in a stock box.
