Second Distributor o-ring on Autolight?

Edit: The second lower o-ring mentioned here is NOT required, and was likely used in error. Some of the kits of misc o-rings that DO have the right upper v-section gasket included others, and perhaps that is why it was stuck on there. Absolutely no reason to use it that I can see.

Original Post:
I just pulled a non-original replacement distributor. It has a second o-ring on this Autolite. Don't know if it is right, or original.
If it was an o-ring, it is squashed to a square-cross-section now. It may have been a thin 1/16 or something like that?

A N*PA assortment of distributor o-rings has one that looks right, and it fits. Not talking about the one up at the top, this one is in the lower part where it seats down in the hole about 4" or so. I'll measure it later...

Owner says it was a replacement back in the 90's. Truck was running ok before. The shaft has a lot of vertical play when out of the engine, about 1/4".
No axial play to speak of. Gear wear looks minimal, with no visible wear band. Roll pins are just fine, not loose. Maybe 10-20,000 on it.

Pertronix sells a stock looking electronic distributor. If you get one with the Ignitor III, you may want to upgrade the coil as well. My stock distributor has the Ignitor III and the Flamethrower coil. Works great.

An FE doesn't use an O ring to seal the distributor. It uses a ring that looks sort of like a lip seal. Up and down end play in the shaft doesn't really matter. The gear should be able to rest against the block with no preload.

Whether Autolite or Motorcraft, for an FE, they both look identical.
