NEED HELP!

So for the first time in my life I’ve got the funds to get a truck, and pay for atleast a year of fuel and repair costs if she’s worth it. And please don’t come at me crazy 😂 I’m just now getting into the diesel game. There’s a 1999 f350 dually with a 2002 power stroke 7.3 in it. Apparently the motor has just been put in it. And it has a bullet proof trans. The whole truck inside and out has been swapped to a 2016 (will that effect insurance with a different GVW than posted maybe???) he’s selling it for $16,500 the truck is beautiful and almost immaculate. I’m going with a good diesel mechanic of mine in fully trust. I saw many threads here and highly respect the opinion of you all! I’m attaching photos below! Also, someone please let me know what states I can’t haul in. I’m not going to run DOT numbers I’m just moving RVs. I want to avoid any kind of bull crap if possible. Or is this type of truck going to cause “legal” issues for my “new” Rv hauling business?

Seeing as how it's a 99 dually with 16 panels you'll still be restricted to 99 weight limits. Don't expect to haul 16 weights. So 10k conventional bumper tow, 11-13k 5th/gooseneck depending on drivetrain options.

You won't be towing 18k# grand designs with it

The best answer is "it depends." It depends on the state, it depends on how the 2016 body conversion was done. In general if the original cab with the original VIN plate at the base of the dash is still in place, the 2016 pieces would be considered to be replacement parts and it does not matter when they were made or what they look like, the truck remains a 1999. If the original cab has been replaced with a 2016 cab with a 2016 VIN plate on it, it gets a lot trickier as some states like mine (Missouri) would make you re-title the vehicle as a salvage vehicle since the VIN tag on the vehicle no longer matches the VIN on the registration. (Some people just move the original VIN tag to the new cab, whether or not that is actually legal in the state differs by state.) What results is up to the state, mine would have given the guy above a salvage title for a 2016 F-350 if he put an entire 2016 cab on a 1999 chassis all at once, it would have been considered putting a new chassis underneath the cab instead of putting a new body on the chassis, since the official VIN is on the cab, not the chassis.

The other thing to think of if you are not running DOT numbers is to not fall into CDL territory or violate any of the commercial vehicle laws for the state.

I would recommend discussing this with somebody who is familiar with the laws in your state. In general the state tends to be pickier about exactly following the vehicle laws for a professional hauler than some random private citizen hauling their own camper to the lake for the weekend, that and the fines are often a lot higher. Anecdotally they tend to come down the hardest on hot shots. The authorities often have the presumption that any obviously for-hire hauler has to have a CDL and follow all of the regs and rules, and it often is up to the hot shot to prove they are exempt rather than the other way around.

I know they guy that owns/built that truck in Georgia. He's a good dude. Older gentleman. It's a 99 with just newer parts swapped on it so will be tagged and everything as a 99.
