226

Had a local guy gave me a 226 just because he wanted it gone. Had run less than a year ago after he rebuilt it but pulled it in frustration when it showed water in the oil.
Anyway, has lots of good parts. I think the problem was the head gasket.
My question is about how best to remove the valves?
Thanks

Remove the manifolds. You can use a valve spring compressor that is used for almost all V8 and 6 cylinder heads, to compress the springs.

I couldn’t use the valve spring tool that is used on V8s. I used a two stage tool I rigged up. I might have pictures. I’ll look in the mo I and post them if I do.

Removing the valves is not bad, compress the springs with a valve tool, pull the keepers, and valves should come out.

Removing the valve guides is more involved and I wouldn’t do that unless yours are worn beyond spec. When I removed mine, I tapped each guide to 7/16-20 and used a threaded rod puller to remove them. It was a beast of a job!

I was able to remove the guides fairly easy but I had my block stripped down so I was able to turn the engine over and insert a steel rod through the lifter hole and hammer them out.

I had a friend machine a guide installation tool for me out of the same steel bar.

I appreciate all the responses. What does the valve tool look like? Thanks

KD had quite a few valve spring compressor offerings that can be found on the secondary market like the KD-700 or even the KD-300 should work for you with the correct jaws: https://fordtoolcollector.org/kd-tools-1950/
