found the ground wire was questionable, and the hot wire was super questionable as well. Replaced both.
the ACC/keyed ignition wire I simply cut and attached to the new wires.
at first I assumed I didn’t ground the new ground wire well.
its straight from back of stereo to body ground at the same point I have an engine to body ground… so leaning toward that not being the issue.
soooo guessing the ACC is questionable.
how would you test that?
it turns off while driving at all sorts of random times… when hitting some bumps but not all… when shifting gears - but not the same gears/rpm/speed…
any thoughts/sugestions?
lazy me is considering bypassing the ACC keyed and just tossing a hot wire to a switch and just switch on when I want…. (Terrible idea? Lazy “fix”?)
This on your '74 I guess. You mention the "the hot wire was super questionable". My Pioneer will sometimes go off in the ACC position, but has not done so in the RUN position. It seems like it is just if I wiggle the key in ACC. Also, because it remembers stations, mine has both a keyed power wire ... and a constant hot all the time wire that is "hot always".
I have considered doing exactly as you describe, one fused hot wire to the radio, catching both the keyed wire and the memory always hot, but rather than a separate switch, just depending on "ME" turning the radio off. One could add a switch, but just on the leg feeding the radio on/off power feed, leaving the memory leg constant.
Do you think it could be the IGN switch it's self?
Being it happens at different times but bumps dont seam to make it cut off I say IGN switch.
You ask why I say this?
What if it makes a weak connection and the radio works but because it is weak it heats up and breaks connection and shuts off?
Did I read it will come back on after a time? If so then it cools off and makes a weak connection again and start all over again.
Ever have an old head light switch heat up and trip the breaker and then cool and reset?
Thinking the same thing with the IGN switch and no the key part the electrical part.

ok.... this is super interesting - I had taken it apart a few months back because my truck wouldn't start - the stereo wouldn't even turn on - but the battery was fine (I figured it was the ignition switch) - I sprayed a ton of electrical cleaner in/all over the thing - and it's been a PITA to rotate/turn ever since. (no start issue turned out to be fusible link)
I'm betting you're right.
Curious - loose wire? add some dye electric grease to the connector? Just simply replace the whole thing? (if I do, then I've gotta carry two keys... one for the door and one for the ignition)

The key tumbler and the ignition switch are two separate components, assuming your key tumbler is in good shape, you should be able to remove that from your old ignition switch and install it in your replacement switch and still use the same key.
