My son has a 1986 E150 with 302 & AOD transmission. I am asking questions to try to help him long distance. I am not where the van is located. He parked the van for a week to remove and replace the transmission, do some front suspension work and exhaust work. Arc welding was involved in the exhaust work. Now that he is done with all that, the van will not start. Initially it would start and run for about 5 seconds. Did that for maybe 10 times. Now it doesn't run at all. Sounded like no fuel to me, but he does have fuel in the tank. So, I have two questions:
1. Does any of this sound like something you have already dealt with on one of these vans, and know what worked for you? I am not looking for an answer like "sure, everybody has dealt with an engine that won't start". I am asking about maybe some chronic thing that some of you know about on these vans.
2. Where is the fuel pump on this van? he says the engine is fuel injected, so I assume it would be an electric pump in the tank. But I don't really know.

There are 2 fuel pumps, one pump is in the tank (low pressure) and there is another one on the frame rail (high pressure)
There is an inertia switch that may have been tripped by your description of the problem
Find and check that before you get too heavy into fuel pump diagnosis
Usually that inertia switch is in either the kick panel or on the cowl panel, inside the vehicle
It has a little round thing you push down to reset it, If the round thing is up, it's tripped

After I sent this question in, he bought a "fuel pump relay". At least that is what he called it. He also described to me that he had discovered that there are two pumps just as you describe and the inertia switch. He now has it running. I will get back to you after I find out just what the problem was, just to close this loop. Thanks for your help!
