I just went on an auto parts store tour because of time issues. I had to get my truck drivable to make it to a brake appointment.
I was hunting for a filter/gasket kit for an fmx/cruiseomatic transmission. These parts are apparently readily available in the old ford truck catalogs but I didn't have time to wait and order one.
I ended up making the gasket for the pan and buying the filter seperately. I won't open that can of worm again. I was originally looking for the reason that my tranny jumped out of gear fron drive to second and found that the tranny mounts and bolts were not connected to the crossmember . I bolted it up and I think the problem is solved. My question , if anyone might know is,
What did the fmx transmissions originally come in. My truck is a 67 f100, and the counter people(relying on their computers and not knowledge) kept coming up with c4 and c6 kits. What are some pros and cons I can expect if any by using this tranny.
It seems to be in good working condition even if it's not the original for the truck.
i took a motor and fmx out of a 63 galaxy 500. this car had 109,000 miles on it. i freshened up the motor left tranny alone put it in my 67 swb been there ever since. tranny has alot of miles put on it since 63 just change the filter and fluid oh i done the motor and trans swap in 1989 i really like the fmx thanks kevin
I hear ya about that gasket! I waited three days for a local parts place to ship it in for me and it didn't fit I was, of course, half way through changing the tranny fluid when I realized this. Ended up finding one at a tranny shop that fit right.
I've heard they're good solid trannys, cruise along real nice, but were rather heavy so they went to the C6.
While we're on the subject, does anyone know where the band adjustors are on these things??
I think the FMX just shift hard, mine does to and I believe it to be pretty much original. One of the Gurus here also said that he knew most of the FMX to shift firm.
It's actually called a mx stands for medium case. I have one in my 67 F250 the pan gasket is different than the fmx very solid trans but hard parts are getting harder to find.
Thanks All for the replies. I've buttoned up the tranny and the problem with jumping out of gear from drive to second was solved when i discovered the tranny mount was not attached to the crossmember. Also I found a new shift collar to tighten things up. Today I lightened my wallet and had the brakes and exhaust done. now all I have to do is drive it. It's quiet, and shifting smooth. I just have to get used to the sore shoulders from cranking that huge steering wheel with no power steering.
But for a good running truck with no monthly payment, it's a small price to pay.
i have an fmx and was told that you could adjust it by something on the side of the case to make it to where you pick your own shift points. is that true because i think this guy is crazy. he is the worlds biggest bull sh1tter. i catch him in lies all the time about ford mechanics and stuff.but i don't say anything since he is my girlfriends dad.
There are band ajustments that can be done, but only to certain specs. A non-expert like my self pulling the pan off like I did to look for an ajustment, only found a can of worms . I took me no time at all to figure out that if I took anything apart on that transmission, i would die of old age before i got it back together.
On my fmx tranny, the only thing i found holding the shift lever in place was a detent ball setup with no ajustment and ten million things that had to come off to get to it. Theres the modulator on the side of the case. I have no reason to believe mine wasn't working just fine.

Same here. If it requires tearing the thing apart, I'm not even going there. I guess C4s have adjuster screws on the side so you can tighten the bands with just a couple wrenches. I was hoping for somehting like that. There may be something along the top, ya know, the only place that its impossible to reach.
good tip for those who were wondering. The shift collar is what locks the park in place when they're new and in good shape. And the tranny mounts keeps the thing in gear while accelerating.
I remember seeing a post about it. It's not absouletly nessessary to buy a floor shifter. the part is anywhere from 24.95 to 30 bucks.
