dumb exhaust question

aftermarket exhausts for diesel engines all seem to be about a 3" or 4" pipe until the last few inches, at which point they expand to 8" or so, so you drive around with this giant dumb looking bell on your exhaust.

Is there any benefit to that? any reason I shouldn't just cut it off and have a normal diameter pipe put in it's place?

It bugs me...

I have a 4" pipe from manifold to behind the RR wheel, and a Walker Big Truck muffler.

the muffler is low restriction, it did not have any effect on my truck's performance.

The MBRP is 4" all the way with a slip on chrome tip that might be 5" at the most.

No benefit performance wise...it just makes it sound louder/deeper...and IMHO, look weird...

Not all of them have the extra large exhaust tip. Look a little down market as the cheap ones generally don't have a tip at all. Below is 4 inch exhaust (with absolutely no tip) if I remember correctly it's a Pro-Flo brand, whatever it was it was the cheapest thing I could find as I knew I wouldn't be using most of it anyway because of the engine swap.

I agree on the dumb looking tip, my 02 F350 is 4" turbo down, and has a 5" tip.. it came that way so I've left it, my 02 Ex I just kept it 4" all the way out, my 00 Ex w/5.4 I had the annoying flowmaster 10 cut out and put on an 18" glass pack and just kept it 2.5" out the rear.
