The old LTX did that quickly for whatever reason. Not the new ones, at least not that I have seen.
I would agree. I had a set of the old Michelin M/S radials on a truck. Excellent highway tire, silent and smooth. Helpless off road and in talking hayfields and roads through the woods not mud bogs. The LTX M/S2 and defender LTX do not seem to suffer as bad in light off road.
I would suggest, if an AT tire is what you're still after, look at the General Grabber ATx's. Good tire, pretty stable even when towing, and decent life too.
I love the ATx, probably my favorite all terrain tire at the moment. Middle of the pack price, excellent in Midwest snow, quiet on road(but you HAVE to keep them rotated frequently), and I put 60k on a set on my previous F150.
Honestly though, most people don’t need that aggressive of an all terrain they just need a Highway tire that can handle wet grass or a campground gravel road with 2 or 3 puddles and they want a more aggressive look. That’s where tires like the new Nitto G3, Conti Terrain Contact AT and Yokohama G015(or new AT4) all shine.
Wherever you buy the tires, you want to be sure it's a shop that knows how to balance a larger tire and will stand behind the work to ensure you end up satisfied. Every manufacturer has a few percent that have defects, and it's the tire shop that should go to bat for you.
I'm lucky there's a really great small independent tire place near me. Search around, there might be a great place near you too.

Ended up getting advice from a heavy truck tire shop Montreal guys recommended, and they helped me get tires that handled the weight better without wearing out so fast. Way smoother ride under load now and no more stress about sidewall flex or heat on long trips.
