7.3 Cab and Chassis

Hello all,

A while back I let go of my 12v Dodge and we went with a Heavy Duty Payload F150 to pull our 3 horse gooseneck. As our needs change, we would like to get a larger trailer with more living space, now looking into a larger truck.

The issue we find with the newer Superdutys is they are much higher and leave little space between the neck and the bed. A flatbed would fit our needs well for towing/hauling/lifestyle. From what I hear, you can no longer order a "complete" truck with the bed delete and need to order a cab and chassis "incomplete" truck. I have read it is a nightmare trying to transfer sensors and radars etc to avoid BLIS and other electronic errors on the dash when you simply remove the bed and add the flatbed

I understand the physical cab and chassis differences (C channel frame, different width, rating horsepower at different RPMs). But my question is will I have any issues crossing state lines with an "incomplete" truck when crossing weigh stations? Will DOT treat the truck and trailer differently as it is not a "personal" truck and is classified as "commercial"?

Any insight from others is appreciated.

DOT won't care, so long as it meets all safety requirements.
Every 18 wheeler out there is a cab & chassis configuration towing a trailer.
You tow your horses for commercial purposes?

Can confirm the tall box sides are a problem with clearance under older gooseneck trailers. Crunched a box corner pretty bad on my platinum this summer. Will be putting a flatbed on by the end of the year.

You can't just cut into the box wiring for a flatbed like the past, but as long as you get the right wiring harness and then take it to the dealer to properly disable the affected systems it seems plenty possible.

or simply buy a XL or XLT since all them other electronic add ones are unnecessary and would resolve all the headaches with a flatbed

XL still has all the unnecessary electronics such as BLIS. To my knowledge, you can not order without it.

Are you saying your work hauling will be commercial or the truck will be considered commercial?

I would be using it strictly as personal however, it would need to be insured as "commercial personal" per my insurance company. (Progressive)

Interestingly enough, I found a bunch of 2024 XL F250 supercabs with 6.8 V8 and service bodys. I know that the chassis cab only is available with the 7.3 so I did a little more digging.

I found the truck on Ford's website - https://shop.ford.com/inventory/supe...cmp=vhp-bb-fbc which indicates it to be a F250 "complete" truck with a pickup bed delete, but I have never been able to find that option on the build and price for 2024 model or the now 2025 model.

DOT will not be after you if it is only used for your personal purposes, they don't care what kind of insurance you would be required to have, so long as you have minimum liability coverage, but that wouldn't even be DOT, just regular cops.
And, you sure don't need to go into a weigh station, that would be the only place you would have DOT guys looking at you.
Put some big "NOT FOR HIRE" lettering on both sides.
And, from what I've read, no more pickup box deletes, but I guess you could do your own, take the bed off and sell it.

As long as the truck is registered in your personal name it wont be a DOT issue. If any DOT officer wants to check you out they will run your plate and after seeing it come back in your personal name 9 out of 10 times leave you alone.

Something to be aware of on the cab and chassis 7.3L is it is rev limited to about 4200rpm. You'll get all the torque but not all the horsepower when compared to the pickup engine. Some don't care, while others wouldn't be caught dead with anything less than the max HP.

You wont like the way one of those rides compared to your F150 I can promise you that much. But you could get an F350 DRW cab and chassis and put a flatbed on it with an integrated gooseneck ball. It would be a "complete" truck when the shop who installs the flatbed signs off on it and shouldn't cause any insurance problems if the GVWR stays at 14,000 or below just like a DRW pickup.

Just buy a regular pickup and take the bed off. Most reputable flatbed companies have plug-n-play wiring harnesses now for their beds.
