Bilstein Shock Lifespan

Hi, folks,

I put the fourth set of Bilsteins on the Excuesion today (212,000). I find that the truck starts to get sloppy after about 35,000 to 40,000 miles on these shocks. Anyone having a similar short life with their shocks?

Steve

I run Bilstein 5100 front shocks and 4600 rear shocks in my 2001 Ex 7.3 4x4. Could not make up my mind so I

Many years ago I installed my first set. 1 shocked leaked fairly soon. Shock Warehouse warrantied it. This was on the rear of truck. I did buy another shock at that time since they are so inexpensive. Then I bought 2 more for the front a few months later.

Now the shocks have been on the truck for many years. Still perfect! I have personally driven this Ex over 400k and am the 1st and only owner. S Fl roads are basically pothole free, and I don't off road or tow. The Bilstein shocks have a relatively easy life in my case but a lot of miles.

FYI The original Motorcraft shocks failed very soon after purchase. They did not last at all.

So, my experience is they can last a very long time if your truck is a pavement queen.

I do expect if you travel on poorly maintained dirt roads the shocks will wear out much quicker.

I've got 60K on my Bilsteins and they seem about like they were when I put them on. No issues so far.

For a stock ride height X, there's no better shock that the KYB Monomax IMHO. Mine lasted ~100K and they were long in the tooth when I pulled them, but you can't beat that for the money.

I got close to 50k on my first set of them. Yea. They are starting to fade. Mountain driving 90% of the time, so you can really tell when they fade. Still better than the xl9000 which lasted me around 15k before I could play them like an accordian with my hands at full stiff setting.
