Yep to Spencer's suggestion. Been addressing this every few months on my '10 Escape for the last couple of years. Use the supplemental fueling funnel to vigorously "funnel hump" the self-sealing flapper at the inlet. Add some WD40 and repeat a couple of times.
On mine, the issue pops up when the computer decides to run the natural vacuum leak detection routine, usually as the fuel level drops to between 1/2 to 3/4 tank of fuel AND the vehicle has been parked for several hours. The MIL sets immediately upon subsequent startup after the test runs and fails.
I will start there.
Today I filed up my tank and when I started the truck it was struggling to start and then was idling hard. It stopped after I started driving
Today as i was driving a humming sound started, it turned out to be coming from the gas inlet. When I parked I opened the gas door and it sounded like it was sucking air. I pushed in the flap and it got louder. After turning off the truck I pushed on the flap again and it realesed air. I figured it was the purge valve so it swapped it out with a new part, the test drive went well. No issues with humming anymore, I don’t have a code reader so I will take it down to jiffylube in the morning to have them clear the code.
