I have a 77 F250 with a 76 360 in it. (I did not do this, this is how it was when I got it). Every now and again it will crank over and start with the bump of the key and run sensational, smooth with no problem. Then other times she will start like this, then die like the switch was turned off or it lost power and the red/green wire on yhe bottom of the switch gets super hot andyou can smell the insulation burning. New parts list includes, carburetor that's been professionally set up and adjusted, new coil, new complete breakerless distributor, new ICM, new starter relay, new voltage regulator, new battery, new ignition switch, new plugs and wires, new air cleaner, and new fuel filter. What else can I check to find and fix this problem?
Before you get all those new parts put on, you might want to do some trouble shooting, so you do not burn up those new parts or your whole truck. Super hot wires, smelling insulation burning it a sign of a BIG problem that you need to address, sooner than later. You must have an intermittent contact of some bare (hot when power is applied) wires causing a dead short. Do you have any burnt fuses, any fuses that are wrapped in foil?
Could be a mice chewed something behind the dash, or under the hood. Something is rubbed on something else. Like hot exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe. I suggest that you get to looking up under the dash for signs of melted or burnt wires. If you can smell it, I think behind the dash is the best place to start.
