Hi all!!! I'm new to this site as I just got a 1990 F250 4wd with the 5.8 and need some help with an electrical problem. It started fine when I first got it but I ran it out of gas and MAY have gotten the electrical system too warm trying to crank it up again. Truck won't crank over with the key but will start when jumping across the solinoid terminals. Truck has new battery, new solinoid, new ignition switch, and new neutral safety switch but still no go. Is there a relay, fuse, or reset someplace I am missing?? Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
If you dont have voltage to that wire with the rubber boot, take a look at your wiring diagram. There should be a connector some where in that wire that you can open up & check for voltage there while someone olds the key at start.
If you remove the wire with the rubber boot from the starter relay & jump 12 volts to that terminal does it crank??
With the key turned to start, that wire should have 12 volts on it from the ignition switch/neutral switch.
O.K......I removed that wire and jumped 12 volts to that terminal and it did crank. I also turned the key to "start", with my voltage meter in line between that wire and the terminal and the meter indicated power coming through with the key in "start mode". SO....what's the next step, or does this indicate a bad solenoid?
Heres how it works, when you turn the key to start the ignition switch sends 12 volts to the neutral safety switch & then to the rubber boot on the starter relay.
Try pulling the connector off of the neutral switch & bend a paper clip to fit in the connector. Does it crank now. If it does the neutral switch needs to be adjusted.
If it still doesnt crank theres a break in the wiring somewhere.
OK, I am trying to remember how this works in my little brain. But, I believe this solenoid provides both power to pull in the coil and complete the starter circuit, and a hold coil, to complete the ground. I would remove the small wire from the solenoid, hook it to a VOM and have somebody turn the kep while you look at the VOM. Look for it to go from open to grounded. That would tell you if it is in the wiring/ignition switch or the solenoid itself.
