Power Steering Too Strong

Good Morning,
Can your power steering be to strong? It seems when I drive my truck that I need more stiffness in the wheel at faster speeds. Sitting still you can rotate the wheel with one finger no issue. Seems a bit strong to me but I have not been able to find a reducer valve or much mentioning of it on the internet.

My setup is:
1954 F100
1977 Dodge Aspen front clip with ps steering box
1984 302 ps pump
I had the lines married together

Thanks,
Will

Heidt's make an adjustment valve that goes inline to reduce pressure and increase turning effort. I chose to go with a Borgensen box but I saw you just replaced yours with a factory style rebuilt. Here is a link.

Got it, I think that will work! I read the destructions and it calls for a 3/8 push on barb return line. For the pressure sides it maybe a little more difficult, it calls for a 1/4 fitting. So, I am going to take the the adjustment valve when I get it in the mail, pressure line I had made (Dodge steering box to Ford power steering box) down to the local hydraulic line shop and see if they can marry the valve in the line and get me the push on barb adapter as well. I am thinking this maybe a little more then the local parts store can do.

Thanks again for the link!

You can adjust the CII pressure with different springs under the outlet port. Ford used same pump on an Escort as a F-350. Too late now but hope your solution works well.

I remember driving a friends 56 ford truck many years ago with the same front end. My experience was exactly the same as you have experienced.

As 5851a said, the pumps are typically all the same. I'm not as confident on the Ford and Mopar pumps, but on the Saginaw pumps the regulator is on the pressure outlet. The same pump is used on the little small cars and the big road boats, trucks, etc. If you remove the regulator from the box there is a stack of washers (shims) between the regulator on the body of the pump.
I can't remember if its more shims for higher pressure or less shims for higher pressure.

Let’s start by it is in and it works great, but damn sure was not a cake walk. I dropped the valve off at a hydraulic shop this morning and they did all the fittings and plumbing for just over $70.00. The issue was there is no room for the lines to attach without crimping. The lines for the return from the pump to the valve to the steering box is just too tight for a strait shot. I had some line that was tight in the spool and I was able to use the curbs to connect everything, in the end it worked but a project that should have taken an hour took almost three. Below are a before and after. Will fine tune everything on a road trip tomorrow.

Thanks again for the tip!

Will

Will, glad it is working for you. Now you know why I went the Borgensen box as opposed to a factory box and the reducer valve.

Yes I do, lol. The next poor sap will be able to see the pictures from mine and maybe go a different route. On a positive side I do enjoy working with my hands and my dad’s tool box. While I was in the service it was difficult to do much knuckle busting. Now I have a shop and most all the tools I need to get the truck back up and running.

Thanks again,

Will
