Planning to add Rough Country power steps to my 23 f350 tremor. I would like to use an upfitter switch as a simple on/off switch as the override switch to disable the steps. Right now the upfitter switches provide 12v power. Is there a way to turn an upfitter switch into a simple continuity switch rather than a power switch? Not ready to start installing aftermarket switches in my clean dash.
Probably, but it won't be easy if you don't want to use the relay method previously mentioned.
The upfitter switch is already a simple continuity switch but it has been wired for a specific function, supplying power to a relay. If you want to use it as simple continuity switch, you will need to remove the connections to the upfitter switch and connect your wires to it.
One way is to locate, under the hood, each of the two wires going to the upfitter switch and then disconnect them or cut them. Tap into those wires with your new circuit.
The other is to disconnect the wires at the upfitter switch. This may require cutting the wires if the connection to the switch is not removable or if you can't source the connector. You will then need to run your own 2 wires up via the A pillar to the overhead console.
Do you want to cut into the wiring of your truck? According to Rough Country, their on/off switch comes with double back tape to adhere it to the dash. You don't need to cut a hole in the dash. I understand your desire not to affect the dash but using the supplied switch is the most straight forward approach. If you have operational troubles with the steps in the future, having an alternate switching methodology will only complicate troubleshooting.
