Hello I got a 96 f150 5.0 and it sound like my smog pump has a chirp there is a hose that come off of it that goes to a canister then a hose off of that which is not connected just blow air and when a cover the hose off with my hand the chirping gets louder is this normal or is my smog pump going out and yes I have sprayed WD-40 on the pulleys and no change thanks
It's not 'normal' but depending on why it's doing it, it can do it for a loooooonnnnggggg time with no ill effects.
The pump uses graphite vanes that rub on the outer housing, and they're self lubricating. As the rotor slots that the vanes
ride in wear, however, the vanes can vibrate, and that can lead to the chirps. Those chirps are pretty harmless.
The bearings, however, can also make noise, and if the noise is coming from there, then the pump's on its way out...
How to tell the difference? I usually spin the thing by hand, and if it feels smooth, don't worry too much.
It's best to do some research now on what is required to delete the smog pump (it's not much), so that you can be ready with a plan in the inevitable event that it fails for one reason or another. Or, once you do the research, you'll delete it on a sunny autumn day while enjoying some adult beverages, before it fails for one reason or another.
best not delete it if you have functional original Cats. if the cats are bad or gone or replaced with a single aftermarkket, go ahead. The 2nd converter needs the oxygen for it to do its job, and removing the air pump would cause the truck to startt setting codes. if it isnt setting codes, that would be annoying.
