'01 5.4, Randomly Dropping Cylinders

This has been going on for a few years but I've never been too worried about, although I'm curious. There is never a check engine light when it occurs but you definitely feel it while driving, especially when under a light load, as in, going up a slight hill in a higher gear. I'll be driving along and feel a slight miss, you can barely feel it, but it's there. Again, it doesn't happen very often. Then yesterday sitting in a drive through, I noticed it again. This truck is my daily, I've driven it for hours on end, and, so far, all is good. I did replace the fuel pump years ago and figure the pump would either work or not. You guys have any ideas what it could be or where to even start?

Your description sounds just like my e99 5.4 right before a coil failed completely.

No light or any type of notice? I can't imagine it would be a coil with only 201,000 miles😃 Short of replacing all of them or waiting for a complete failure, there's probably no real way to identify which one it is, is there?

The codes are normally pretty accurate in telling you which coil to replace, or at least which cylinder to investigate.

My replacement set of 8 coils went bad around 180,000.
No lite at first, but it did eventually. When the replacement went bad, I unloaded it with no lite lit. Went over to the dark side and decided I was done with gassers.
Maybe in the 5.4 forum somebody might be familiar enough with forscan to moniter some pid's and narrow down your issue.

Sounds like a mild misfire.

Use your scan tool to monitor the cylinder misfire data in Mode $06. Many Super Duty trucks used an OBD1 calibration that had much looser fault reporting criteria so often no check engine light.

Without using a scan tool you can check your plugs and see which one is showing signs of misfire. Will usually be more fouled than the other plugs. More work than using a scan tool, but hey, if no scan tool then it's better than nothing.
