I've got a new used 460 supercooling radiator i'm going to install but first i want to flush the cooling system. Can someone on here guide me on the best way to do this? Do i use some kind of chemical? just flush it with water? Car running or not? What is the correct procedure for this? Thanks in advance.
A lot depends on how dirty the block is.
I had 1 motor that no chemical flushing would get clean and would over heat in no time even with new radiator and a 3 day chemical flush.
This motor was so bad it rusted out 3 block and 1 head freeze plugs. Mud sat in the bottom of the water jackets and that kept the water from picking up heat and moving it to the radiator.
As said I used a 2 part chemical flush more than 1 time and it and way longer them it should stayed in.
I know someone that used Evap A Rust, think he cut it with water. Kept it in the system a few days starting and letting it idle up to temp and shutting down.
Flushed and filled with anti freeze. A year later had to open up the cooling system the coolant was rusty so????
So me depending how bad I may pick 1 of the above to flush and go from there?

It's not overheating and the coolant looks clean. Local mechanic around here who does a lot of classic mustangs advised me to flush it before installing the new radiator.
Your mechanic was probably thinking of the common Prestone or similar flush kits you see in any auto parts store. Very simple. You just use your own garden hose. Won't get the very, very extreme but helps with any reasonably normal cooling system.
A previous responder mentioned to "not forget about the spring on the lower radiator hose"......what may I ask is that? I have a 73 F-250. 360 2wd and plan to flush out the system and put in new hoses and new heater core. Thank you
My local mechanic was talking about a plug in the rear of the block from which you need to flush the coolant channels? Does anyone know what he means? maybe have a picture where this plug should be?
