So I was gifted the American Autowire Classic Update kit for my birthday, along with the AAW crimpers. Next step, putting it in. I still have the old wiring (which is pretty Mickey Moused in some places with whatever color wires PO’s had on hand) in place. Asking the ones who’ve been down this road of replacing all wiring, should I pull it, or leave it and pull after installing the new kit? I would of course cut at the firewall grommets in order to free the space for the new grommets and wires. Thoughts?
I have not done a replacement as in pull out the old factory and replace it with after market harness but this is what I would do.
Do you have a wiring diagraham for your truck, that is a must!
Before pulling / unplugging I would use tape and mark the plug with a number and then on a note pad write the number and what that plug went to.
This way down the road you can look at the plug and notes and know just what it went to.
I would then pull it and lay it out on the floor kind of how it fits in the truck.
I would then lay out the new harness on top of the old so it doubles the old.
Use Velcro to tie "fingers" or branches up and the main harness this way if you need to add / remove more wires you can and no need to cut wire tires or sticky tape.
I would not cut any wires or try and put plugs on wires at this point.
You should now have a new harness that is close to the old one as they are on top of each other.
If it helps maybe put the numbers from the notes of where they go if you think it will help.
I would now feed this new harness into the truck and the branches placed where they should go.
Once you 2 and 3 times check the lay out and that the wires in the branches are where they should be you can start cutting and putting the plugs on.
I know you have not "taped" the harness yet but it should have plugs on and if all plugged in I might try and power up the truck to make sure all is good.
If it tests or you are happy with it pull it all out so you can "wrap it".
Once wrapped install and plug it in and you are done.
Oh I pulled a full factory harness from my parts truck and installed it in mine.
Dash and wiring went right into my truck after a little fixing and painting.
