After searching a lot of posts regarding antennas it made me wonder, is my antenna original? And is it possible to replace it with a screw in type antenna?
The black gasket and the chrome snap on cover look OEM, but the rest does not. Since you have the OEM looking base, you have 4 screw holes and the big hole in the middle to work with.
I don't know what kind of new car antenna you want to use, but when you take that old one off you're definitely going to have about a half inch hole and four screw holes.
In 1986 when I bought my '77, it had already been repainted once and the 4 smaller holes were not there (I guess maybe were already welded shut?) and it already had a aftermarket three piece telescoping mast aftermarket antenna. I got a one piece stainless steel antenna and lead from a '70s Mopar and replaced the aftermarket antenna as the mast snapped off one day. I snugged it and marked where I needed a slight bend to straighten it up.
I run up on a NIB OEM antenna kit at a flea market and was gonna use it, but I decided that I preferred the old Mopar one and was not gonna redrill them 4 holes here just a few years ago. The sectional ones are chromed, are fat at the lower end, and are kind of distracting. And if I cover the truck, ... the mast unscrews easily and will lay on the dash.
