I don't open the glass a lot. 100° in the summer is too hot to enjoy it. And 20° in January is too cold.
But I do open the Sun Shade a lot. as I've aged, I like the extra light in the cab to help me read stuff.
Twice maybe Three times a year, I open and lube the moving parts. I park in my garage at night.
so you spend more time maintaining and lubing it than actually using it. sounds like money well spent
Good choice. I refuse to pay extra for more holes in the roof sheet metal. I don’t want clearance lights on my truck either unless they’re required by law (DRW and Raptor). Although the Raptor clearance lights wouldn’t bother me being in the grill and built into the high mount brake light I wouldn’t pay extra to have them installed.
Same here. Always have to sit with my head towards the center of truck so my head doesn't hit. About 1/2 inch clearance is all I have. When buying a truck the dealer always claims to have never heard this issue
Yeah...like some vendors I have worked with.
"We have never heard of this issue...but we have a fix for it that costs 10k."
If you have never heard of it, how do you have a fix for it already
ummm, ahhhh, my, look at the time, gotta get on a call with another client
So go and talk to the usergroup..."yeah, been had that problem 5 years go, they patched it for us way back then and we paid for fix, meaning it should be free to everyone else..."
What to you mean YOU paid for it, we paid for it to be developed 3 years ago?
But we were told last year there was no fix and we had to pay for it.
Moral of the story, don't trust a salesperson or tech support when they say "we've never heard of the issue before"
For me a sunroof/moonroof is kind of like having an ex-wife. Once you've dealt with enough issues, you learn your lesson. Everybody learns at at their own rate.
I have one in a 2005 Mariner, opened it maybe three times in all those years, keep the shade closed, at 6 4 with no hair it gets hot up there when the sun shines.
We have sunroofs in 5 vehicles and the only issue is with a 2004 E500 with 242'000 miles that keeps saying to close the sunroof when turning it off, despite it already being closed.
No leaks on any of them, and the oldest of the 5 vehicles is from 1981.
Lots of sunroof-angst in this thread!

...well, I guess that theory is accurate then: still married after 28 years.
I have had 3 - F-150’s and now the F-350 all with the sunroof in short I love the way the truck feels brighter and more open inside with it, I usually never open the glass it but the cover is always open. In that time the 2016 F-150 has two issues, one the drain tube came off and caused a leak, dealership reattached it and never had another leak. Second issue on the 2016 was the rails have a plastic track, dumb design. I replaced the rails for $150, no way I was paying a dealership $1k+ to do it. That’s when I also learned that you have to lube the sunroof seals and not lubing them is why the track cracked. The sunroof seals would stick and when opening the sunroof would put a lot of pressure on the rails as it pushed through to open the sunroof. Since then I lube the seals every few months with silicone and I have had 0 issues on the 2021 F-150 or the 2024 F-350. In the end you can’t control accidents like a tube popping off (well a zip tie can) or rocks and hail but, you can perform some simple maintenance and it should last.
I have a 2017 KR super duty. I love the light my sunroof provides inside the cabin. The only problem I’ve had with it was when a tree fell on the roof of my cab. Luckily a branch hit before the entire tree rested on any metal, but that branch went through the front panel of sunroof breaking the glass. Had my insurance company send someone over to replace it, but I noticed the glass is a different color from the back glass. In investigating it further, I saw it was replaced with a Tempered glass panel. The 2017 glass was originally Laminated glass which in my opinion is much better. Especially if it were to shatter! Does anyone know why Ford changed from laminated to tempered? Other than to cut costs. I hate how Ford has cheapened these trucks since 2017. I’m gonna hold onto mine as long as it will have me.

Hey man everybody likes different things so if you’re happy with your 2017 thats all that matters. Drive the truck you like it’s not a crazy idea.

Actually its the other way around, they switched from Tempered to Laminated. Tempered can shatter if a rock chips it just right when driving and can lead to a crash from the explosion of glass over the drivers head. What your insurance dd was use aftermarket glass and not factory.
