Had one in every one of my vehicles and wife’s vehicles. Never a single leak. Only problem I had was the tracks broke on my F150 sunroof after 8 years. A whopping $50 in parts and a few hours worth of work and it was running like new.
I have one fully knowing the issues that might arise. I just try and keep up with preventative maintenance. I have been through a few St Parks here in FL with my fifth wheel where there are a ton of low hanging limbs on either side and I’ve actually been able to look out the moonroof to make sure I’m clearing the corners of the rig as I creep along.
Had a couple on a few used vehicles I purchased. When open, wind noise was too loud to keep them open. Had the internal shade closed 100% of the time because of the glare. I would not pay to have a moonroof on any new vehicle I buy.
yep, mine failed. Fortunately, it was under warranty at the time so no issues there. The ONLY family member who ever used it was our Irish Red and White Setter. She would not put her head out the window, but loved to stick it out the sunroof.
The only reason I have a moonroof is because it came with a package that had something else I wanted and was not able to get another way and I could not delete the moonroof and get the money back for it.
Due to my height, all cars are tight on me and my head just scrapes with top of our truck, so having those extra inches would be nice.
I am on the front range of Colorado and hail storms are a reality. I have had to replace 2 sunroofs in the past on my wife’s cars, one due to hail .
I think that says it all right there - hail. I wouldn't have a moon roof. Actually I have one but it was sort of forced on me because of the desire for massaging seats (which Ford ended up not providing - long story).
Anyhow, no failures. I try to exercise it but really don't use or need it. And with the fear of hail in the mountain areas I always worry about it.
I enjoyed having the sunroof/moonroof in my last Ram. It was fun to have it open on nice days, driving with the windows down, rear window open, and the sunroof open, but then I reminisce about my childhood when dad's truck didn't have AC so that was all the cooling we had. I parked outside 100% of the time, often right around trees, and living on the bay means we have bugs and spiders galore. I never once had the drains clog, and never had an issue with the mechanism freezing up.
That said, I wouldn't get another one. I'd rather have the headroom that you lose from all the mechanism. I definitely would NOT get one in a Ford. My FIL had it in his '22, and it was a major contributor to why he traded it for his '23. That panoramic roof acts like a magnifying glass, especially for the rear seat, if the shade is open, and the interior of the truck heats up FAST. He would leave the shade open at first, opened the glass once or twice, then left it closed until he got rid of the truck - it just wasn't worth the heat it created.
I was reminded this morning of the shortened head room with the glass roof. I am so used to the spacious interior of the Flex that I forget the lack of it in the truck and bashed my head against the track. There is about two flat hands f space between the ceiling and my head. In the Flex its about a hand and a half vertically between my head and the ceiling, or roughly 7-8", instead of less than 2". Of course I now have a sore neck from hitting the roof.
Everyone is different, but we've had one in our super duties since 2006 without issue. Probably 8 different trucks in that timeframe and the key is to use them and occasionally do some maintenance if you leave the truck outside. I wouldn't have a truck without a moonroof but I've heard others that have concerns but I'm either keeping full coverage or an extended warranty if we push beyond the factory....more for mechanical but we ensure these things are covered as well.
my thoughts. lets see.
1. potential leak point
2. more cost
3. more weight
4. more weight above the center of gravity
5. less headroom
6. failure point which can let rain water in if stuck open
7. make the vehicle feel more open
8. kids like them
9. dogs like them

just wondering how tall you are? I am 6'4" and with the seat lowered for driving comfort I still have plenty of headroom.

Same here. Always have to sit with my head towards the center of truck so my head doesn't hit. About 1/2 inch clearance is all I have. When buying a truck the dealer always claims to have never heard this issue
So I am looking at a Lariat that has a “Moonroof” and looking for feedback on them in the Super Duties.

PITA and $$$$.
Anybody had notable failures, leaks or other experiences with the ones in S/D’s?
Discuss in a civil manner.
I too have had a moonroof (F150 2017) and had to have all the tracks replaced at about 35k miles. Then it had to be replaced again due to hail but so did the entire cab of the truck. I don’t think hail is that big of an issue the glass is pretty thick. My biggest issue with them (aside from they will fail eventually) is the amount of heat they let in. I’m in Texas and our summers are hot. I won’t buy another truck with any type of sun/moon roof.
I had always avoided them, Back in 2000-2006 You lost headroom if you had a SunRoof.
When I bought my 2017, I found a deal on a platinum and it came with it.
I had no problems, So I ordered it on my 2020 and my 2023. So in 250,000 miles of use, I've had no problems with mine.
I don't open the glass a lot. 100° in the summer is too hot to enjoy it. And 20° in January is too cold.
But I do open the Sun Shade a lot. as I've aged, I like the extra light in the cab to help me read stuff.
Twice maybe Three times a year, I open and lube the moving parts. I park in my garage at night.
