Local dealers here seem to love ordering trucks with sun roofs. I found a couple of builds sitting on the lots comparable to the one I have on order except they have a sun roof. I passed.
No need to spend another $1500 on something cosmetic that most likely will just cause grief down the road.
There is PROFIT in every option that is added. When I bought my 2015, is was a lot truck, end of year leftover. I didn't want sunroof, but it had it, and at $12k below sticker, I wasn't going to let the sunroof stop me.
Damn it, it sure as heck did go and leak on my one time. One of the corner drain lines got plugged, was an easy fix.
I agree, I have avoided it on every vehicle I have ordered.
If something CAN leak, it will. Have had a few in the past that did. Mainly due to clogged drain tubes. The wife has a Ford Edge with the full moonroof....plastic piece that followed the track that held the mechanism to open and close broke....of course it was half open, took 3 days for the repair place that was 50 miles away and the only one in the state to get the part.....and it cost ~$1K to fix. However, the wife LOVES her sunroofs....happy wife, happy life.
you should pray every day and three times on sunday that youll never have a problem with any of them. they arent cheap to fix. and if they get stuck partially or fully open and the weather destroys your interior then what you gonna do. some people and even kbb says they add value but its a crock of crap. imo they deduct a huge amount. i want nothing to do with vehicles that have them and many others feel the same

Sounds like you'll be fine if you get a new truck every couple years...
Friend of mine was looking at a used 2019 at the dealership. Only 75k miles on it. Moonroof track was tweaked and bent. $5000 to fix it.
My trucks live outside and I tend to keep them for a long time so no big holes in the roof for me. I also have a convertible, a Landcruiser with a removeable top and our Mercedes SUV has a sunroof but they all live in the garage.
I don’t really care either way but my wife wanted one. I never actually open it up, just roll the shade back so we can see out. Like most things, they do take additional maintenance to help them along. Every year I open mine, clean it out, check drains, and lubricant the seals. My truck is also kept in a garage so that probably helps as well.
I will add one caveat to my previous statement regarding my somewhat dislike of the moonroof. I purchased my truck from a dealer in Colorado Springs. When I purchased the truck I literally got off of a plane from AL and I to the truck at the airport. I did zero inspection of the truck prior to handing over the check…I know, shame on me. I had little concern as the truck was/is Ford Gold Certified.
Anyway, after three weeks of ownership and a trip through the car wash and polish, the sun caught the hood of the truck just right and I saw a small dimple. My first thought, Colorado…hail. So when I got out I did a thorough inspection…sure enough the entire hood speckled with tiny dents. Tearing the worst, I immediately jumped into the bed to inspect the roof and mop roof…not one single indication of any damage. So at least there’s that. I suspect the roof being a structural component of the truck is probably slightly thicker material which would help prevent hail damage to some degree.
Would never order a truck with one for all the listed reasons but the used one we got has it. Foolishly got curious and opened it once just to see if it works but I'll probably never try it again since the slide in camper pretty much lives in the bed so the sunroof is always covered anyhow...
I love the openness of it, and I try to keep at least the shade open as much as possible. The open sliding rear window and sunroof make a pleasant breeze and you can still have a phone conversation at highway speeds.
Have had 7 ford dual moonroofs. Never had 1 problem. (Knock on wood) wouldn’t buy another car without a dual one. (My wife has a Yukon with one ) I love the brightness the light lets in and makes me feel happy and just makes the cabin feel spacious.
if I had a problem I would think otherwise but the fact that a ram heavy duty or GM heavy duty don’t have one is just funny to me personally
i open the roof 10-20 times a year so I would also be ok with something like Tesla where the roof is just glass and doesn’t open. The light is the most important thing to me personally
So I am looking at a Lariat that has a “Moonroof” and looking for feedback on them in the Super Duties.
I am on the front range of Colorado and hail storms are a reality. I have had to replace 2 sunroofs in the past on my wife’s cars, one due to hail and the other the drive “cable” (cogged plastic strip) broke and you had to replace the entire roof assembly.
PITA and $$$$.
Anybody had notable failures, leaks or other experiences with the ones in S/D’s?
