I'm trying to figure out how to upgrade to a drop pitman arm for my 2wd 97 F150 with the 4.6. The tie rods are scraping the undercarriage. Need a better angle. Anyone have any idea how many splines I need to be looking for? I'm reading a couple places that a F250 pitman arm might be a possible solution to install. Thanks.
You are looking for 3 or 4 dead splines (missing splines) on the sector shaft and pitman arm (they must match)
I take a pick tool up above the pitman arm and go over the splines looking and feeling for the dead splines
When I see or feel one, I continue going around 90 degrees and see if there is another dead spline there
If there is, it has 4 dead splines (at 90 degree intervals)
If there is no dead spline at 90 degrees from the other dead spline you found, you have 3 dead splines at 120 degree intervals
Generally, the older trucks had 3 dead splines and 1996 or 1997 and newer have 4 dead splines
I'm curious to know why you would need such an item. If it's due to a body or suspension lift, what ever kit you used should have included it. If no lift, you have something bent that needs replacing.
