I was replacing the water pump and hoses today and thought what a clutter the assembly is on the top. Is there a complete replacement available to remove the servo assembly, tall enough to hook to the IC plumbing? Will it set a CEL if all the connectors are left unplugged?
I think that depends on the programming. With my Ford service 6.0 there was no electronics behind the covers. The harness plugs plugged in, but went to nothing. No problems. In your case probably the easiest tell would be to disconnect those plugs and then run the truck to see if you get any codes. You can easily wipe out the codes afterwards if you get any. And you could test if the engine is running poorly. That would tell you if you could go ahead and put it on the newer elbow.
Almost all of the aftermarket elbows eliminate the throttle body assembly. If you want to keep the stock 03-04 elbow, you can order a spacer from S&B that doesn't have all the connections and unnecessary bulk of the stock part for about $100 shipped.
Still haven't installed mine, but I have checked and know it will work.
As for CEL's, I have had three different stock tunes in this truck and none had an issue with the harness not being plugged in at the throttle body.
Before you laugh I received it the other day and the outer tig welds are good, the inside disaster not so much. I took my dremel tool and eased the imperfections to make a pretty nice usable elbow.
I was going to buy a name brand but they were a month out (those that had welded bungs) and the ready to go offered no bungs for boost gauge.
I will not trust the oring provided that is most likely CHYNA crap, so I bought an OEM oring.
All in all I will install tomorrow and see what happens. The elbow is solid and has a nice lip for the CAC hose on it that most do not.
I will probably invest in a nicer elbow that uses the OEM oring I purchased to use with the low buck piece from amazon. The machined groove would only accept the thin o-ring it came with, and I really don't have much confidence in it. I am sure I am overthinking it at this point, but that's all I need is the cheap o-ring to fail then I am really out of luck.
I don't know why you're so worried about the o-ring, but the RCD part doesn't look deep enough for the stock gasket either. Have you contacted them to verify?
If the o-ring was BUNA or silicone I probably would not think twice. The o-ring is a standard .50 piece that over time may not take heat cycles as the OEM does, and I'd rather not find out.
The amazon elbow has a very poor internal finish that I was able to clean up with my dremel but overall I am not too happy with it. For the 40.00 spent I'll give it to a buddy or hang onto it.
The site specifically states "Uses Reusable OE Seal" under the Review/Descriptions section, which is the only elbow I found that accepts the OEM seal.
