2012 E350 question about part under hood!

Our van overheated due to lower heater hose quick connect. When we popped the hood immediately after pulling over, the area pictured was charred and smoking. I’m the worst at using Google and can’t seem to find it in any manuals or diagrams. What does this piece do? Does it being unsealed cause any problems?

The hose was repaired, but the vehicle has been running “heavy” with a deep rumble and we can’t figure out why! Thanks in advance!

I believe that leads into the heater core/air box for the heating an ventalation system, if something was burning up in there it's hard to believe you wouldn't smell it inside the vehicle.

Thanks for the reply!

Oh, smoke was pouring out of it and the smell was awful! But we didn’t know what was wrong with the vehicle until the shop got to it. They’re saying it was only the heater hose, so I’m trying to figure out what this is and if it’s a problem.

Just underneath that area, if I get eye level, I can see some sort of foam seal that has eaten away. I can get a better pic in the morning, but wondering if that also plays a part? I marked it in this picture to show about where the seal runs, behind the washer fluid opening. If you zoom in and look closely, you can see some of the dissolved seal.

For access to the actual fresh air intake for the HVAC system remove the plastic cover mounted just below the windshield, the black pieces with what appears to be fins.
