Question:
Why won't my truck start?
Details:
Transplanted engine. All wires hooked up to where they are supposed to be. Starter turns motor over very easily. Is getting gas. The coil is getting 12V. The ground is only conducting about 3V when the positive lead is connected to the bat. and then grounded on coil. It isn't firing at all.
Any Ideas?
Brain Box?
Coil? Resistor?
Bad Wire?
the points could be shot, or the coil could be gone, just last week my dads 84 f150 with 300 i6 wouldnt fire and he ended up changing the coil and the resistor, so it could be a # of different things. good luck
Did you pull the distributer while assembling/mounting engine? You might have the distributer in 180 degrees off. If so, you could turn that thing over till chevy's rule and still not get it running. Yea, like that would ever happen. Are you getting spark at the spark plugs? Check for spark, if none, look at points, cap, rotor, condenser, coil wire end etc.
well the motor came out of a 78 LTD.
I am not getting spark at the plugs.
I think i am going to go with a new coil. How much better will the truck run with a hotter(better) coil, or should i just get a stock replacement?
I am familiar with all parts but the condesner.
Chevy's Rule?
The pickup tells the ignition when to give spark when the engine turns over. Had the same problem a week ago had spark intermittenly ended up my MSD box was junk. Put the factory back in only cost 34 bucks for a new igintion box. My guess would be the box or coil.
fordeverpower might be on to the problem. i had this problem on a 77 351 the roll pin that holds the stator in place was loose, beleive me it wasn't that loose but just enough. oldcarnut
there is a small roll pin that holds the stator, or star tight to the shaft of the distributor. if it is the slightest bit loose to let the stator move it will not start. this is on the dura spark system. also the way to tell is after you quit cranking it it acts like it hits just as the motorstops turning. oldcarnut
I have the haynes, I looked throught it to find the stator, but i didn't not see it. I went and check that part, it is as tight as it can be. I might have to pay somebody to look at it.
