Odd shifting, uncoordinated trans

Howdy,
I have a 96 f150 E4OD, and was taking myself home today, and I noticed my truck was in 2nd, then high rev’d to 3200 rpm, once I took my foot of the gas and coasted for few secs it shifted, same with third to OD.
i was doing about 50 mph, and it kept trying to come out of OD just to shift right back into it. OD is working, it’s just not sure of when to put what gear in it seems.
it was fine this morning, but not this afternoon.

im assuming it’s the shift solenoid, but I’m not quite sure. That’s why I’ve come here. Not to mention, I’d rather not have a costly trans shop tell me an easy fix if I can help it.
the trans is new as of 2020, with only 16~18k on it.

I checked that first, it was fine, it was about 1/3 of a full hash mark, which is definitely good. Color looked brand new. I even checked the radiator for ****s and giggles, rad was fine.

Check your trouble codes. It might lead you in the right direction. Could be the Vehicle Speed Sensor, instrument cluster, TPS, MLPS, Computer, wiring, TOT sensor, ETC.

How did you check the fluid level? Cold, or hot and running?

what kind of reader will do that? My 96 is both OBS 1 & 2, and I’m assuming it can be read via the port under the dash?
my truck isn’t throwing a code yet. As far as the dash says.

A 1996 model year F150 is OBD-II only. You need a good quality reader. Several posts in recent past indicate the newer generic code readers are not displaying transmission related codes. Highly suggest a good ELM327 adapter and FORscan free version.

Oh gotcha. Buddy of mine said it was both when I was looking into buying it years ago. I’m assuming FORscan will tell me what the code means, or do I need to find a code book? I found the scanner on Amazon, it’ll come in quite handy in the future I’m sure.

vss is on top of the rear axle. There may be one on the output shaft housing on the trans too.

I replaced the one on the rear axle, but after plugging the unit behind the glove box (can’t remember the name off the top of my head) back in, It made my speedometer go nuts, so my mechanic said just to leave it unplugged, and it was driving just fine. I’ll have to look at the one on the trans, to see if it’s bad. But it’s a rather odd problem if I do say so myself.

If the VSS signal was compromised you typically get a code indicating that.

Is there a wiring diagram for either VSS? In the event I need to do some re-wiring.
