Temperature gauge issue

2006 E150 4.6L 195K miles

Truck was parked for 2 1/2 months. Starts and runs fine. Temperature gauge needle is at midpoint when ignition off. After starting to drive gauge rises to high (maximum) as truck warms up. Engine doesn't appear to be hot.
No coolant leaks, overflow bottle full. No current codes or CEL. Pending PO152 code. Temp with scanner is 78 degrees C (173 F). Temp with laser thermometer is 180 degrees F.
Where to start diag?

Is the temp sensor connector corroded? Good ground?

Th temperature sensor is a simple resistor that changes with temperature. Disconnect the wire and measure resistance. See if it is stable and how it changes with temperature. Google search to find the specified resistance values.
