Erratic Heat/temp Gauge

'95 F150, SC, 305 w/ A/C

Recent problem with erratic heating. Sometimes it blows heat, sometimes cold. I also notice the temp guage is fluctuating. It's not a real temp gauge, just the stock idiot gauge. But the gauge is behaving differently. It's all over the place. I was getting ready to flush and add new coolant, but thought I'd post first to see what anyone thought. I'm thinking possibly a sensor or a malfunctioning thermostat. Ideas, anyone?

My gauge does crazy stuff too. Sometimes when I start up cold, it starts at the halfway point and moves forward from there till it pegs then drops to where it should be. The next time I start, it might start from the correct spot and go OK. I know it's not hot but it scared me the first time it happened. I changed the sensor but it still does it. Could be the gauge, Not gonna mess with that. My problem is I don't get cold air even though the temp gauge is at half way when run for a while. I'll post all the details on this seperate.
