1998 Expedition Shuts Down
My son and I have the same year 5.4 expedition and the same problem. When in low going downhill slowly, if I stop the engine sometimes dies. I notice the RPM's drop under the idle RPM when this happens. I checked with him and he has had the same problem. Rig starts right up and no check engine light. I never had this problem while hunting last year but had it happen about 5 times this month while hunting in the same area. One time I had the transmission in 2nd and when I came to a slow stop the engine died. I am not driving in 4wd. Can anybody give us an idea why this happens? Thanks.

I would focus on the idle air control valve (IAC). When your foot is off the gas pedal this valve control idle speed. If it gets worn or dirty it can get sticky and not respond as it should. Often if you remove it, you can spray carb cleaner in the mechanism and get it to work again, otherwise, just replace it.
