Pro Trailer backup

I am an avid bass fisherman meaning I fish every week, usually once at least.
My 2024 F-250 came wit the back up feature and I wondered if it's worth the trouble to set that up. For those of you who use it what are your thoughts, worth the time to set it up or are you like me an already know how to back up a trailer.

I've been backing up trailers for nearly 40 years, from the smallest single axle utility trailer to 53 foot 18 wheeler trailers, never had any desire to use a **** to back up with.

What is the pro trailer backup feature supposed to do?

Watched a video for it on YT: dang, that looks more confusing than doing it the old-fashioned way!

It’s for soccer moms and cucks that shouldn’t be towing anything in the first place.
If you can’t back up your load then don’t tow it.

If you are the type that ends up in one of those boat ramp fail videos it is for those people.

When we had our boat the ramp was a very entertaining place. We always wondered how many divorces were initiated on a boat ramp.

I took the time to set it up and try it out on my F150. It feels odd but it does work. Its really good for backing up a long way in a straight line. So yeah, it's probably perfect for boat ramp people with little experience.

If you know what you're doing already though, I don't think it's worth the effort to relearn.

I tried it out on my travel trailer and didn’t like it.

Maybe I set it up wrong, but there was no indicator on the screen of how sharp you will turn based on how far you are cranking the ****. Kind of like how the lines bend when you back up the truck without a trailer. So there is still guesswork with how far you need to crank the **** to get the trailer where you want it to go.

the other big problem is that there is some lag between changing the position of the **** and actually getting the truck to head in that direction. It doesn’t pre-crank the steering wheel like you can when doing it manually. So you lose the ability to make quick fine adjustments.

ultimately I decided it wasn’t for me. I have more than one trailer and I’m not going to set it up for one and still have to learn the old fashioned way for the others. They stopped giving out the trailer stickers and now just make you use the yaw sensor. But you only get one.

What worked for me (and I probably read it here somewhere) is to pretend you’re driving the trailer, not the truck. Use your mirrors and the **** to get the trailer pointed where you want it to go, then just put your hands in your lap and the truck takes care of it from there.

I set it up and tried it. It works fine and you'd get used to it, if you continually used it.

I have it. Never set it up. I tow a boat also and rather back in myself.

I had this feature in my last Ram truck. I never used it. Tried it once and it was harder than just using the steering wheel.

I see it as a feature that *might* be useful for somebody who has never towed anything before. But if you've been towing for years it's far easier to just use the steering wheel.

I won't order it on a vehicle unless I'm forced to get it (to get the trailer package on wife's new Expedition you HAD to get it, she only tows our flatbed occasionally). From what I've read it's not very useful, and has the potential to cause issues since it has a delay in doing anything that I can IMMEDIATELY correct for doing it manually.

As I've explained to my 12 year old (who does a pretty good job backing trailers), it's not hard to do, just remember that it's backwards from just backing the vehicle. Another way I've heard it put is turn the BOTTOM of the wheel the way you want the trailer to go.

Backing trailers manually is easy, it just takes some practice.

On my F150 I found it to be great backing my small utility trailer. My wife who has a very time backing anything could put it in a parking spot with just a couple minutes of practice before. I didn't really care for it backing a large travel trailer, didn't let me turn tight enough and the tongue jack would block the sticker.

I have not tried it with my F350 and 5th wheel yet.

Try it and see, it is different so go to an open parking lot and practice 1st. I suspect the smaller the boat the more you will like it.

I couldn't wait to try the Pro Trailer Backup when my new truck arrive. The set up was not a problem and part of the fun of the new system. I forget to use it any more
