Headliner Backing Board

Headliner replacement!

I’m no stranger to this job; I’ve replaced many from various Ford models of this era. I went to do the job on my early 99 but found that the backer board in this truck is an extremely thin piece of fiber material. Like paper thin! Every other one I’ve done has been beefy card stock or some form of substantial fiberglass. This one is quickly falling out of shape after I removed the cloth and foam. I do not think it’ll retain its shape well enough for me to recover it. So what are my options here? Did the later models use a different material? My Google searches have came up empty so does anybody know of an aftermarket product out there?

I tried to use a brushed on epoxy to stiffen it up but it was already too late. It’s completely lost its ability to retain the shape. I’m thinking of hitting up my local JY and pulling another. That in itself won’t solve the problem but, I believe if I don’t pull the liner and foam, I maybe able to use it as a fiber glass mold and I’ll just make a new piece all together.

I got to say though, I am amazed that there doesn’t seem to be a ready made solution to this. I’ve searched out this and other forums, done extensive Google searches and posted this on a couple Facebook groups. I just can’t believe I’m the first to run into this problem

I think most people just yank it out of there when it starts hitting them in the head, lol.
