I had the engine (302) and transmission (C6) out of my 1980 F100. I got it all back in now and started the truck up. Immediately after starting it will throw itself into reverse. Shift indicator on the dash doesn't change from P. I didn't touch anything with the transmission so I'm starting to wonder if I 1) reconnected the linkage wrong or 2) some things got bent that affected the adjustment. Does this look right? I've tried finding pics online but it seems like there are many possibilities and I couldn't locate my exact setup. I disconnected the linkage, put the rearend on jackstands, turned the shift level selector all the way clockwise (should be park?) and started it to see if it behaved correctly. Unfortunately, the level fell down into gear due to all the vibration and such. It started to storm pretty bad outside so I'll have to get after it again tomorrow, but looking for any insight tonight. Thanks in advance!
Keep working with it. Do not rely on the PRND321 indicator. It's nothing but a piece of plastic and a string attached to the steering column. Easily broken.
If any part of the linkage is bent or misaligned, it could prevent proper engagement, Inspect and verify that all linkage connections are secure and correctly aligned.
To make sure it is not something with the trans I would disconnect the linkage at the trans and push the lever into park and start it and see if it jumps into gear or not. If it does not jump into gear when running it has to be the linkage.
Move the lever all the way into park. You may need a helper to hold it there. Then see of the linkage fits back into place with out moving anything.
If it will not fit then you have to adjust the linkage so it will fit back into place with out moving anything.
I dont see any adjustment in the picture so it must be in the engine bay?

Yes, adjustment in engine bay.
No helper today, but I was able to zip tie the linkage into park and all is well in that regard. I've got bigger issues, though, which will need another thread. Thanks for the help
